INTERFACE REDESIGN

Sephora - A Redesign Case Study

January 2022 - March 2022 (6 weeks)

Project Overview

I picked four pages from the Sephora’s website (both desktop & mobile view — not the Sephora App) and redesigned those pages for a new and improved visual and user experience. I also compiled a case study documenting my design strategy and the design process.

My Goals

With this project, I want to gain experience working and designing with an existing brand styles while remaining authentic and unique. I am also taking this opportunity to familiarize myself with Figma, understanding its functionalities and capabilities.

My Tasks

Figma prototyping (desktop + mobile view of website)

Case study

Key takeaway

I had a lot of fun while doing this project, and I am proud of the work I produced. Not only is this my first 2D design work, but it is also the first time I worked with Figma on a complete project with a case study. From the technical perspective, I learned how to use Figma to design mid-high fidelity prototypes of web design using features like auto layout, components (including variants), and prototype animations for screen transitions, overlays, etc.

I also learned the use of a design system and gained experience in making one building on top of the existing brand image and language. If I were to expand the project further, I would redesign a couple more pages, like the product catalog page and the checkout page for a complete user flow in the redesign. Doing so will provide the opportunity to see how my redesign philosophy work to improve both the visual experience and the user experience of the users, and in turn, give me more insights into how design could change experience.

If I had more time...

I believe a UX design process would not be complete without any user research. If I had more time, or if I were to extend this project, I would incorporate a usability study of a similar usage flow for three to five participants to get a deeper understanding of the user group and the interface, especially what is currently working for the users. I also want to A/B test my design decision of a very clean and impression-driven home page, comparing to the current page which is geared towards product discovery.

Side note

This redesign is done solely on my impression and experience with the Sephora website, both the current design and my redesign are not tested by any users due to time constraints of the course. But I still tried to create a sense of flow in my prototype, so I implemented a very specific user flow: Homepage —> Quizzes & Buying Guides (from hamburger menu) —> My Loves (heart-shaped icon at the top right corner) —> specific product page (NARS Light Reflecting Advanced Skincare Foundation at the second row).
